When we first moved to St Malo, we had to travel back to Paris for a few times to duel with some paperwork. We tried to take advantage of the 4-hour drive and drop by somewhere to visit on the road. The first trip we found ourselves in Châteaudun and Chartres.
Châteaudun castle is not overly famous, we had the place all to ourselves when we visited. From outside, it looks very impressive, however the rooms are empty. I am a bit disappointed with this castle to be honest. With it being half way between Paris and the Loire valley, it has real potential to attract many more visitors.
About 50km of Châteaudun, we arrived in Chartres that is famous for its cathedral.
I still find it impressive, but the cathedral had somehow lost its appeal to me. Don’t get me wrong, it is just that I have visited my fair share of cathedral in France, like Cathedral Saint-Pierre de Beauvais, Cathedral Notre-Dame d’Amiens, Rouen and Strasbourg. I unfortunately started to find them more or less the same.
From Chartres, it is another 90km to Pairs, thus it is definitely a good place to stop for rest.
Next St Malo-Paris trip brings us to Orleans and Le mans. Stay tuned.
