Where should I go next?…

Vitré: a trip with regret…

(This is the third part of our weekend trip, for the first 2 parts, see here: Rennes & Fougères )

The last stop of our trip was Vitré. It is about half an hour drive from Fougères, so the two towns make a perfect day trip (from Rennes preferably).

Similar to Fougères, it has a medieval touch and is also famous for its castle.

Vitré has preserved its original appearance with its timber-framed houses, old streets and its ramparts. It looks exactly like a 500-year-ago town.

We started our visit with the town and saved the castle for the end (we thought we would). We made our way to the main street and somehow we did a small circle and came directly to the castle entrance. The old center of Vitré is small, there is no need to worry about getting lost and it won’t take long to make a quick tour.

I was careful to check all the opening hours (due to low season) and made plan accordingly but shame on the organization there, the castle was closed on the day we visited without advance notice. So needless to say, I was highly disappointed.

The only photo of the castle I was able to take through the castle gate

We tried our best to see as much as we could wondering around the castle…

I am not able to compare Vitré and Fougères as I am missing one big element (the Vitré castle), but I believe it would be a hard pick between the two.

Bon voyage à tous 🙂
Til next time Vitré…

PS. Vitré isn’t a tourist friendly place, you won’t find a website for the castle and thus I spent ages searching for practical info for basically nothing in the end…
