Located half an hour drive from Rennes (~50km) is Fougères, a small commune famous for its château. Along with Vitré, Clisson, Ancenis, Châteaubriant, to name a few, Fougères lay in the frontier zone between Brittany and the Kingdom of France and had defended the Duchy of Brittany until the 15th century. The Fougères castle is an excellent example of a military fortress. It is built on a naturally protected site – a rock emerged from a swamp and surrounded by the river. It is well worth the entry fee (8.5€) to wonder around the 3 enclosures within the castle and climb the towers. You can easily spend an hour or two in it listening to the free audio guide and taking photo of this stunning castle. After the visit, don’t forget to take a walk in the town. The town itself has a medieval touch with old stone buildings everywhere. I adore Fougères and it is definitely worth a stop if you are in the region. It is also very close to Saint Malo and Mont Saint Michel so it is very convenient to make a day trip out of it.
Bon voyage à tous 🙂
