Alignments de Carnac: mini Stonehenge

I’ve been writing about my old trips in the south so it’s time to catch up with life in Brittany (technically Nantes is now in “Pays de la Loire” region but it was part of the ancient Duchy of Brittany).

Recently, we went out of town to visit a friend of Dada and do some sightseeing at the same time.

Our first stop was Carnac where there were more than 3000 prehistoric stones over the 3 alignments. It is believed that they were erected around 3300BC so they have been standing there for over 5000 years.

The one where I visited was the “Ménec alignments” with around 1100 stones. Rows of menhirs (upright standing stone) stretch over. It was a pity that there were fences around the stones and we couldn’t get any closer to them unless joining a tour.

The “Kermario alignments” are further down the east and there is a prehistoric museum just next to the car park for anyone who is interested in getting better informed.

Our next stop was Quiberon, a peninsula that offers you an opportunity to hike along the coast overlooking coves and caves. We cheated by driving and stopping along the road (there was free parking space next to each observation spot) instead of walking all the way.

It felt like a mini version of the coastline in Ireland and I adored the view.

Both places will be very crowded in another one or two months when tourists and even locals come for the beaches…

By the way, the oysters from Brittany are one of the best in the world and Dada showed me one oyster farm around the area.
